How much does it cost?
There is no cost to join - membership costs are paid by the Troop. Boys will need to purchase a uniform, which normally costs around $30, but used uniforms can often be found at thrift stores. There is no costs to participate on outings, but the cost of food is typically divided among the members of the patrols. Personal gear is perhaps a Scout's biggest cost, but is also an area where there is a wide variety - from borrowing equipment to purchasing used equipment to purchasing inexpensive new equipment to purchasing deluxe equipment. Because boys learn over time what works best for them (and because they grow quite a bit) many Scouts purchase a collection of equipment over time. Some outings and activities have a fee that is subsidized in part by the Troop - in 2010 Scouts paid $115 of the $225 summer camp fee and $125 of the $300 cost to raft the Deschutes river. If a Scout participated on all fee-based outings in 2010, the total cost would be $999. The Troop offers scholarships for Scouts that wish to attend camps.
